All UV-C Light Sterilization Units are Not Created Equal!

What is UV-C or germicidal UV light?

Germicidal UV or UV-C is part of the ultraviolet spectrum best known for its ability to inactivate pathogens like bacteria and viruses. It utilizes specific wavelengths of the ultraviolet spectrum, typically between 200 to 280 nanometers. VioUV™ has 254nm wavelength.  Germicidal UV is used to disinfect rooms and surfaces. Aerosolized coronavirus can remain in an indoor space up to 3 hours and live on certain surfaces for up to three days, so it is critical to disinfect at regular intervals. For decades, scientists have known about the disinfection ability of ultraviolet wavelengths, specifically germicidal UV (also known as UV-C). The International Ultraviolet Association is a good source for information and studies. https://iuva.org/

How do you know if your UV-C light is Inactivating viruses & destroying other microbes?

Many of my clients are purchasing “Air Purifiers” with an enclosed UV bulb and unethical manufacturers are claiming this will effectively destroy bacteria & viruses. You will have “clean” air but not a sterilized workspace.  Others are purchasing small UVC lights with low wattage. It is important to know the difference!

Dosing and exposure time for UV products

Finding the right dose for UV products depends on two main factors: intensity and time. The higher the intensity, the less time it will take to kill pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Products with a lower intensity will take a longer time to get the same level of disinfection. A higher-power UV unit will enable you clean a space quicker than a low power unit. Most offices and especially healthcare settings opt for high-power mobile units like VioUV™.

The distance from the UV lamp is also important. Surfaces further away from the UV product will not get the same level of disinfection as surfaces close to the product. A small unit on the floor with a low watt bulb is not effective in larger rooms. The light needs to hit the area for effective sterilization. VioUV™ is 5’8” tall with 1 high power 325-watt Philips UVC Bulb with irradiation intensity of 1500 uW/cm2. This enables us to treat large square footage quickly. The height of the device, power & intensity of radiation determines how quickly & effectively you can treat your space.

Peace of Mind backed by science!  See chart below for treatment with VioUV.

The best approach for protection from the coronavirus and other pathogens requires a combination of safety protocols. Use all the tools in the toolbox.  Follow the CDC & Department of Health guidelines regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitize and disinfect surfaces thoroughly, and use UV-C Light Sterilization as a final layer of defense.
